Wooden Box
If you are anything like me and like working with wood then creating a wooden box should be a breese. This wooden box can be very useful around the house to store everything from toys to tools...
Why pay a lot of money for a generic toy box for storing your child’s toys when you can create one yourself? All you need is a cheap wooden box and a little imagination and your child can have a custom toy box that he will cherish for the rest of his life.
Unfinished furniture stores are fantastic places to find the supplies for any furniture project. You can pick up a wooden box of any size and work with it to create the perfect toy box for your child. If you are handy and have basic carpentry skills you don’t even have to do that. You can just construct the wooden box which will become the base of the toy box out of supplies you can buy at Home Depot or any lumber yard.
When constructing the wooden box, you want to pay special attention to smoothing sharp edges and making sure that the wood is sanded properly so there is no danger of your child getting splinters or busting their face open on a corner.
Once you have created the wooden box, you will need to add hinges to keep the lid open so that it does not come crashing down on your child’s fingers.
Hinges can be found at Home Depot or Lowes and are pretty inexpensive to buy. When compared with buying a brand name toy box, the entire project of creating one yourself will be less expensive overall.
Once you’ve assembled the wooden box it is time to decorate it. You can either stain it with wood stain or paint it in a color your child likes or that matches the rest of the furniture in their room. Most people opt to paint the wooden box in bright colors, adding details that are special to the child such as favorite animals or even their name in paint.
Once you’ve worked out the basic design for the toy box, you can tape it off and paint it.
Depending on how porous the wood is, you may need several coats before the color is as vivid as you want it to be. After letting the paint dry for a few days the whole box can be finished using polyurethane to protect the design and keep it from chipping.
When you really think about it, why pay hundreds of dollars for a pre-made wooden box to store toys when you can create and customize one yourself for just a fraction of the cost. The best thing about a homemade toy box is that it is one of a kind, and because of that will become a special keepsake for your child.
However although I keep referring to storing toys this wooden box can be used to store tools and even books.
